Hi everyone: I just endured 8 days without power due to an ice storm. Cell phones dying was an issue. My vehicle has a charging port but I didn't drive far enough to get much charge. Has anyone used a battery backup to charge their phone? I see conflicting answers as to whether to just plug in to the running generator, I don't want to damage my phone. I also saw that some battery backups don't support Samsung fast charge. Any advice would be appreciated.

You can try something like this.. check the Reviews.

https://a.co/d/0LsgMao

I'd get the 20,000 MAh

I DEFINITELY would NOT plug your phone into the generator directly... MAYBE with a power bar.

I recommend a battery jump pack for your car. They also have usb charge ports led flashlights and emergency strobe flashing. I got a Gooloo GE4500 from Walmart delivery to my door for $85.
I have helped stranger's jump start their cars and sometimes they even stuff money in your pocket.
Thanks but that's not what I need. I need something to charge phones without using my vehicle (which I can do but inconvenient and not enough charge on a short trip to buy gas for generator) 😂

Hi Wooleybear,

That sounds like a tough 8 days glad you're safe!

As adviced by RedDogRabbit please avoid plugging your phone straight into the generator. If you must, only do it with a high-quality surge protector or power strip in between to prevent any voltage spikes from damaging your device.

Thank you RedDogRabbit for your suggestions.

I thought it was potentially damaging to your phone but my husband did it (against my advice) then after checking online there are plenty of opinions that it's safe. I'm buying the battery backup, Hubby is on his own 😂!

Using a generator to directly charge a cell phone, can potentially overcharge, or damage the battery in a cell phone..

"potentially" being the keyword, but I personally wouldn't risk it.

"While some portable generators have a 12V output for charging, they are not designed to fully charge batteries directly, and their unregulated output may not be ideal for battery charging, potentially leading to issues like overcharging or damage." - Google A.I. response.
