That is the proximity sensor. When you are on a call it turns the screen off so you don't accidentally dial another number and to also avoid inadvertant touches while holding the phone to your ear. It also reduces display power consumption.

Galaxy Ayour all wrong, that is a Samsung Robot (bixby) spying on us to make our phones better, this is why Galaxy devices are soo powerful :)
