When taking sefiles, the camera always defaults to focus mode always, and the picture taken is not the one you see from the screen. The photo is cut off top and bottom. So basically, the image is already small from being in focus mode, then it's gets cut off even more. Anyone has any solution?

You don't have a Canadian S9 to begin with. You have the Wide Selfie update. Then, select the Wide option. You see the two icons, one with a single person and one with two? Select the Wide (2)

Yes. That is actually the issue. The camera always defaults to normal sefies. Therefore. Photo you see on camera screen is different from the picture taken. Using the wide sefies works perfectly
