Overheating comments below cover other issues than just Dex.

I normally have a Windows desktop for my main documents and minor graphics. Recently it died.

Whilst organising a secondhand Windows replacement, which will take time to appear, I decided to implement Dex as a temporary replacement, using my S23 FE and an HDMI connecting cable. See below on wireless requirements.Basically I am very happy with this but there are cautions.

Using cable

1. Monitor, you need to make sure you have an HDMI connection on a monitor and your monitor works for Dex. I had to buy a monitor. I ended up buying a 27" Samsung monitor for $175 cheaper on Amazon but who wants to risk the monitor being thrown in transit.. Brilliant. If you want to travel you can get, fairly cheaply, a portable monitor, might as well make it a real desktop and get one that is 15" ++ Or use the tv monitor in your motel, possibly need wireless Dex for that.

2. At the basic level you need to have a usb-c to hdmi cable or, see below.. But you actually need to have an adapter as the monitor uses some current and will run down your phone charge fairly rapidly. My 5-8 year old adapter has at one end a usb-c connection to the phone or tablet. At the other end it has a usb-c charger connection, an hdmi port and a usb-a port. This means I have to have an hdmi to hdmi cable. I prefer a wired keyboard so the usb-a port is a bonus. I had available an adjustable stand holder for my phone. Bottom end adapters cost around $12-20, cheap stand around the same or lower with Temu.

3. OR a usb-c to hdmi cable and wireless charging. However, you will find Zoom meetings and video phone calls difficult as the wireless charger has to remain flat and you need to aim the camera at you.

4. Apps sometimes work differently in Dex and you may have to login with password again. Zoom, as an example, lacks a number of settings in the app. I haven't tested the browser version.

Wireless

1. This requires a minimum of a smart monitor including wi-fi. I will leave it to others to check compatability.

Overheating

For a number of devices over-heating is an issue. In Dex this results in short periods of no screen and the fear that you are blowing up either the phone or the monitor. This was resolved by removing the phone case and using a fan on it.

Using an app called Ampere which shows temperature. Temperature when blackouts occurred were around 38C with noting specs usually allow higher temperatures but this was with continuous use. Current temperature witth fan and no case ranges from around 29C to 32C. Occasionallly on low use down to 22C. I have a mesh case on order which allows air flow. Not a lot of these on Amazon, etc.

Quick ending. Dex is brilliant but with quirks.

I find that if you leave the handset screen on dex is more likely to cause the overheating.
Also dex does work wirelessly with the right setup. I have a current Samsung TV which connects to dex wirelessly

Thanks for your reply. I am starting to think my hdmi cable has an intermittemt fault. However, the fan makes a huge difference. Leaving connected to dex is definitely a cause. I only have a monitor so no wieless except yesterday I found a very old mirroring dongle and will give it a go in due course.😂
