When I try to call a landline number the phone says I need an area code. Why is this so (if it is correct). I can't find anything using Google

Hi @RogerKing, this would be dependent on your location and where you're calling. When calling landlines, you may need an area code to ensure that the correct number is called.

This is because different areas can have the same landline number active. For example, there may be someone in Melbourne with the number 9123 4567, and a different person in Sydney with the same number (9123 4567). Thus, the only way your device can identify which person to call, depending on your location, is the area code (02 for Sydney and 03 for Melbourne).

Hope this helps!

Hi @mischvus, try going into

Phone app > ⋮ > Settings > Other call settings > Roaming assistance > Automatically add the country/region code when calling people you've called before.

Once you've input an area code once, it will assume this is the code for when you call the number in the future.

My phone is set with roaming assistance on and I still need to put in an area code. Any other reason why this might be?
