Galaxy AIf you're also with a Canadian Carrier, that's likely the reason why you need to use Smart Switch to get the update.
You could always Download the CORRECT Firmware and Flash it yourself with Odin.
Smart Switch is likely to be simpler though.
Don't know why people get a US model living in Canada, unless they were living in the US previously.
There's no advantage to getting a US device.
And, yeah, anyone else who has a US device & a Canadian Carrier has this problem.

Galaxy AYou don't have a SIM in your device?
OTAs are based on the IMEI number & a US device won't receive OTAs in Canada, unless you have a US Carrier.
Unfortunately people who buy their phones from Amazon Canada & EBay, often buy US, or International devices unintentionally.
Have to verify the model number to make sure it is Canadian.
If Smart Switch is working for you, great. There's also no warranty in Canada on a non Canadian device.
