Gmail numeric icon notification

I have observed that gmail has a icon notification which usually means pending email. On my android 11, there is no email pending. Is there another method to identify the icon notification number ?

Tap the Gmail icon > menu (3 lines at the top) > scroll down to Settings and select > general settings > go to Manage notifications and select > toggle allow notifications > scroll down to Notifications categories and select > below your email address, tap Mail > toggle allow notifications if it's not > scroll down to Application Icon Badges and allow > close Gmail.

It is set for notifications. For some reason it does a notification where there is none. If I get a new email it will indicate 2. Once read it goes back to 1 with no email pending.
