Perlite is a volcanic glass that is heated until it expands or "pops," somewhat like a popcorn kernel, to make a small chunk of porous mineral. Among the many perlite uses, due to its sterile and pH neutral nature, is rooting cuttings. This lightweight material is also used to lighten heavy garden soil mixes as well as to improve the soil's ability to both retain and drain water.

Tips: Moist perlite is used by itself or as part of a sterile rooting mix when starting cuttings. You can also use sand or vermiculite for cuttings.
