Previous post from other members said why the Feb update for Note is not out yet. This post make me think of Why Android update needs to go through each carriers? I understand that if someone buy a phone from Rogers, the update will go through Rogers since there are some software have been hard coded in their Rogers firmware.

So, how about many of us purchase the phone directly from Samsung? No hidden software, phones are unlocked, nothing from carriers. Why we still need to go through carriers waiting game on updates?

What about iProducts? They use carriers service too, but the update is directly from Apple and no delay. So, what is the problem with Android? Can we get update directly from Samsung if we purchase directly from Samsung?

Anyone know why?

Hi Jeremie, thanks for the answer. I was just wondering Android update is so different than iOS. As Android phones locked to carriers, but iPhones are not. 🤔

It's only the FIRST Sim card you insert that sets your CSC to that specific carrier. Afterwards even if you change Sim cards to another carrier, your CSC will not change therefore won't reboot and wipe your device.

do carriers actually modify, compile, test and push their firmware versions, or is that still under Samsung?

I understand that new or custom features, as well as release dates, are dictated by carriers.

However, Samsung is in control of the operational aspect and servers/repositories that push updates.

Correct?

Yes Samsung is in control. However, the carriers I believe give their go ahead and then Samsung releases.

Example: I had a note 8 originally locked by freedom. Later it unlocked and the SIM card removed. Only wifi use.

Nonetheless it received the Pie update automatically.

Was Freedom involved? No SIM involved.

If no SIM card involved, your Pie update from where? I don't get it then...

from the wifi interface (wlan0) while I was connected to the internet.

The same with an LG V20 I have, which was automatically updated to Oreo without any SIM.

Freedom was not involved, only samsung.

Here's the explanation:

The fact that you inserted a Freedom Sim (first Sim inserted) makes it so your phone sets the CSC to Freedom (you get all updates based on your CSC). If you remove the Sim OR insert a new Sim your CSC will not change, it will still be Freedom. You can decide, however, to change your CSC manually but that will wipe your device data. There's a way to change your CSC.
So that's why when you remove your Sim you still get the updates through Freedom regardless.

@theonecid

is this documented somewhere?
the phones were unlocked.
I also have a tab s3 and a tab s4, both non-LTE.
the updates will come from samsung servers.
I believe both my unlocked and SIMless phones received updates from Samsung servers too, even though Freedom gave the green light.

My addendum to this question is why can't updates be provided by WIFI? The update is provided by Samsung not the carrier.

Security updates are provided via WIFI. Why the difference ?
