Galaxy NoteYou want a red dot rather than a number?
Press and hold an empty space on the home screen, then tap on Settings.
Scroll down until you see App icon badges, tap that and then you can select to have a dot rather than a number.
Please keep in mind that this will apply to all apps, not just txt messages.

Galaxy NoteYou can do this by going to Settings/Apps/Choose default apps.
Then tap on the text: SMSapp, this will open a screen allowing you to choose which app should be the default for SMS/text.
The apps displayed to choose from will vary, depending on what's installed.
