Galaxy SDon't know for sure why it happens for you, but you SHOULDN'T let the battery discharge down to 10%.
It's recommended to charge when the Battery gets down to 20%, if you're interested in preserving the life of your Battery.

Galaxy SMaybe when it gets to ~15% Toggle ON "Power Saving". That should maximize the amount of time left on the Battery.

Galaxy SHi geekyguy,
Thank you for sharing your experience. The rapid battery drain below 10% is a known behavior linked to lithium-ion battery characteristics and device power management.
Lithium batteries are on a curve for how well they hold power. Past a certain point, they die super fast. Your phone will try and adjust the numbers to avoid shooting down at 10% but the older a phone gets, the faster it goes.
For optimum Battery life for Devices it is best not to let Battery Drain that low, Samsung suggests your phone runs between 20 and 80%. obviously this may not always be possible and to an extent depends how often you upgrade.
