Previously before the phone was updated about a month ago when I had an incoming Sms text messages the icon would indicate if I had a message. for example 1,2,3 would indicate that I had that many messages now since the update those numbers do not appear but I would like to see if I have a message without actually opening the texting app

Have you try go to recovery mode and do a wipe cache partition? I recommend do it after major upfate.
- Power off your phone
- Press and hold vol up and power key until you are in recovery mode
- use vol up and down to navigate
- select Wipe Cache Partition
- press power key to confirm
- click yes
- click reboot system

Galaxy SHi,
We understand how helpful it is to see message counts on app icons. After a recent update, some settings may have changed, which could affect how notification badges appear.
Please try performing a Wipe Cache Partition, as suggested by Tallman — this can help clear out leftover system files and resolve minor glitches after a major update. It’s a useful step if you’re experiencing any post-update issues.
Thanks for the helpful tip, Tallman!
