Hey everyone,

I've got a weird problem after updating my S23 Ultra to One UI 8. A couple of my recent SMS messages have disappeared from my phone, and they were really important to me.

What can I do to get them back?
I cleared the cache and rebooted, but the problem is still there

Are you using Google Messages or Samsung Messages?

If you're using Samsung's Messages, you can check in the trash, Google Messages doesn't currently have a trash / recycle bin.

Are the messages that disappeared ones that you sent, or ones that you received? If it's received messages, the sender may have selected the "disappearing message option"?

You can try:

  • Reboot your device.
  • Turning RCS Off & On.

You may have accidentally deleted them?

Thanks for replying. I'm using Samsung Messages, and my trash function is on, but none of my messages are there. The lost ones include both sent and received messages, and it's kind of random. For example, an SMS that my client sent me last week, including a list of items, is missing, but my reply is still there. In another contact, the last two messages are lost, including sent and received, and so on. It's not possible for the sender to delete my messages, right? I've tried contacting Samsung support; they only suggested I restore my backup. I've restarted the Messenger app, cleared the cache, and rebooted many times. I turned off the RCS messages from Google Messenger, but Samsung's doesn't have this feature

Yes, it IS possible for a Sender to delete a message.

Backup your messages, in addition to using Smart Switch to backup messages, I also use the app in the attached screenshot.

You can backup your messages to Google Drive or Dropbox.

Then go to Settings > Apps Search for Samsung Messages & Click on it > Scroll down to Storage & Clear Both Cache AND Data & Reboot.

Open Samsung  Messages and your Messages SHOULD be restored by your Carrier.

⚠️ ONLY RECENT messages will be restored from your Carrier..

Although I have done this in the past with Google Messages, and all of my messages were repopulated.

⚠️Backup your messages with Smart Switch and or SMS Backup & Restore BEFORE you Clear Both Cache & Data for Samsung Messages.

Hi Frank292,

It is unusual to observe that, following the update of my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra to One UI 8, several of your recent SMS messages have disappeared from the device. We kindly request that you attempt the troubleshooting steps suggested by RedDogRabbit and verify the outcome.

I don't think that it's a "Samsung problem", as it's the Carriers who have your SMS/MMS/RCS on their servers.

It could be a hiccup on their end, or on your device, but I don't recall ever having any messages disappear.. ever, unless I deleted them.

Samsung needs to stop fiddling with these phones so much with their updates. If I wanted to change my phone completely id go buy a new phone.

You should appreciate the "fiddling"! Most of it is designed to improve the security of your devices!
