If i select the always on lock screen to show for new notifications, it seems to work fine but the lock screen doesn't go away. Is there a timeout setting that needs to be toggled?

I don't think it goes away until you either turn the screen on or dismiss the notifications

That will will cut into battery life if you don't happen to notice it right away...

The always on display uses less than 1% hour.

I changed it back to always selected. I had it on the show for new notifications. That is where my concern is.

I use it for new notifications also and can't really tell if it impacts battery. If it does, it's so minimal that i can't tell the difference when using it or not.
