Galaxy S
Based on past posts.. the ability to blur image backgrounds in S23 has changed in implementation. This is a handy feature because smartphones have such a wide depth of field (short focal lengths plus small sensor) that in typical photo mode, backgrounds are often in fairly sharp focus so can detract from the main object of the photo.

So with the current One UI 7.0 release (7/2025) to get a blurred background, this works well:
- shoot in portrait mode
(this doesn't automatically blur background .. at least not for nature shots)
- then opened the image in Gallery and swipe up to reveal 3 choices 1st image below):
Live Effect Background Effect Remaster
Background Effect offers a few choices including blurring (default is no blur).
The 2nd and 3rd images below show a portrait shot of a flower pot as shot (2nd) and with FULL blurring (3rd). Quite a nice blur .. like the blur effect which is present naturally (optics/focal-length/sensor size) in typical full frame cameras.

Galaxy SHi MitchG,
Thanks for highlighting this, and your explanation is spot on! Yes, with One UI 7.0, background blur in Portrait shots on the S23 Ultra is now applied manually after capture. Just open the photo in Gallery, swipe up, tap Background Effect, and choose the blur level you want. It's a great way to get that DSLR-style look!
Definitely a useful feature for those who enjoy shooting portraits, product shots, or isolating subjects in busy scenes!
