Right now with the current SIM card the phone is locked to the carriers network. To have the phone unlocked you will have to go the store where you purchased the phone, let the associate know that you want the phone unlocked. They will enter a special unlock code, remove the SIM card and that should be it.

Since December 1st 2017, all phones sold in Canada are Carrier unlocked.

You don't have to go anywhere to get a code.

But are they even asking that, or are they just trying to get past a screen lock?

Well, if they are looking to unlock the Bootloader on a Snapdragon device, they're in for an unpleasant surprise. 

While there's currently an exploit (PAID) to unlock the Bootloader on some Samsung Snapdragon devices, the latest series which can be unlocked are the S10 devices.

Pretty sure that it's not available for the S20 / Note 20 devices or the S21 series.
