Galaxy SHi Karnival, based on what you're describing I have a few suggestions:
1. Restart your device, there may have been an issue while Messenger rang, it silenced the background apps. This is usually intentional design by the app to prevent other sounds from disrupting your calls. It's possible the app glitched and it stayed in that mode so a restart could do the trick.
2. Check if anything is blocking the speakers as dirt or lint from your pocket may get into the speaker and microphone.
3. Check if your other volume settings are reduced. To do this, go to Settings > Sounds and vibrations > Volume > Check if all four volume types are on.
4. Download Samsung Members to run our diagnostic checks.
Open Samsung Members > Get Help > Interactive Checks > Choose device issue.
This check will tell you if there are any internal issues or deviations with your device. If so, the best course of action would be to send it in to your nearest service centre to be assessed. To find your closest service centre and book and appointment, click here: https://www.samsung.com/au/support/service-centre/
Hope this helps :)
