I’ve been running into an annoying issue with YouTube captions on my Samsung devices. On my Samsung tablet, captions work perfectly fine and stay enabled across videos, as they should. However, on my Samsung phone (on the same account and same app version), captions don’t stick—I have to manually turn them on for every video.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
1. Verified that the YouTube app is fully updated.

2. Cleared cache and data for YouTube.

3. Ensured that both devices are running the same Google account and caption preferences.

4. Double-checked system-level accessibility settings (captions are on).

5. Logged out and back into YouTube.

Still, captions behave perfectly on the tablet but bug out on the phone. The settings are literally the same. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Could this be a device-specific YouTube bug, or something Samsung-related?

Any ideas on how to fix this are welcome—I’m losing my mind!

Hi Kathrin1,

This issue sounds like a frustrating inconsistency, and based on what you’ve tried, it’s likely a specific YouTube bug or a settings conflict. Here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve it:

Check YouTube Caption Preferences on the Phone: Open the YouTube app on your phone. Go to Settings > Captions and verify your preferences. Make sure "Always show captions" or similar settings are enabled.

Force Sync Your Google Account: On your phone, go to Settings > Accounts > Google Account. Tap Sync Now to ensure account preferences are fully synced.

Reinstall the YouTube App: Uninstall the app, restart your phone, and reinstall YouTube from the Play Store. This can resolve deeper app-level bugs.

Check for App-Specific Permissions: Go to Settings > Apps > YouTube > Permissions and ensure no permissions are restricted. Especially check settings for accessibility services or device preferences.

Switch to Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Mode: If you’re using PiP mode on your phone, captions may not always display correctly.
Disable PiP for YouTube and test if captions stick: Settings > Apps > YouTube > Picture-in-Picture.

Test in Incognito Mode: On your phone, open YouTube in Incognito Mode and see if captions stick.
If it works, the issue may be tied to your account-specific data or app behavior on the phone.

Report the Issue to YouTube: Open the YouTube app > Settings > Help & Feedback > Send Feedback. Include a detailed description and specify the devices you’re using.

Thank you.

Thank you so much! I managed to fix it by:
Opening YouTube > Settings > Captions > More Options > Language (changing it from Default to English)

I really appreciate the help. The captions finally stick throughout all the videos!
