OthersI'd stick with Google Messages, but you should be able to fix the issue by going to Settings > Apps > Google Messages & Click on it > Scroll down to Storage & Clear BOTH Cache & Data for Google Messages > Reboot.
Don't worry, you won't lose your previous messages, they will be repopulated by your Carrier. Clearing Cache & Data is NOT deleting your messages.
See if that fixes the issue for you.

OthersHi, yes as said by RedDogRabbit you can perform Clear cache and Data for the messages app.
Clearing the data and cache for the app wipes all the stored cache and may fix a crashing issue.
