[ UPDATE 17/10/2020 8:00 ]: Maxis VoLTE is now available for selected devices. It also works on our iPhone 11 Pro Max and we maintained 4G when we make a call. The VoLTE page is also back on Maxis’ website.

After a long wait, Maxis has started offering Voice over LTE (VoLTE) on its network. Not only it offers faster connection and higher quality for voice calls, but it also allows you to stay connected to 4G when there’s an incoming call.

According to Maxis, VoLTE promises to offer lifelike voice call quality. Since it uses 4G, calls can be connected faster and it has higher bandwidth for better quality. Without VoLTE, Maxis users would automatically switch to 3G when there’s a call and this can be annoying if you’re using data simultaneously.

The introduction of VoLTE is also crucial as Malaysia aims to shutdown 3G by the end of 2021. On top of that, it is also a prerequisite to enable 5G and it would be silly if devices still need to rely on 2G or 3G for voice calls.

To activate VoLTE, just make sure that you’re using a compatible device and enable VoLTE in your phone’s settings. According to Maxis’ website, it’s compatible with the iPhone 7 and above running on iOS 13.1. It also supports Android devices including the Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10T series as well as the Mi Note 10 Lite, Poco F2 Pro, Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9. The VoLTE support list also covers selected Oppo, ZTE, Samsung, Vivo and Huawei devices. Below is the full list from Maxis:

According to Maxis, VoLTE is available for all Hotlink Postpaid and Maxis Postpaid customers. Maxis postpaid customers with Share N Surf (Multi-SIM One Line), Maxis Business customers with Maxis Business Postpaid, and Hotlink customers will be enabled in a later phase.

When we try to enable it on our Maxis postpaid line on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, we got a warning that this mobile network has not been certified for VoLTE. Even after it’s enabled, it doesn’t seem to work and our iPhone still switches from 4G to 3G when we try to make a call. Maxis is also the last telco in Malaysia to offer VoLTE as other operators such as Yes, Digi and U Mobile have introduced the feature several years ago. Celcom has recently enabled VoLTE for the iPhone just several months ago.
