Adaptive brightness is absolute garbage compared to what was once auto brightness. It doesn't work as well nor does it work as fluid as auto brightness did.
I spend more time now manually adjusting the brightness which is to me, counterproductive.

Please return auto brightness.

Try resetting the usage patterns for adaptive brightness. It is quite hidden in Android 10.

Open Settings and go to Apps.
Search for an app named Device Health Services.
Tap on Storage.
Tap on Manage Storage. (bottom left)
Reset Adaptive Brightness.

I also make sure to turn off Adaptive Brightness before making manual adjustments. That way it isn't 'learning' a bad behavior.

I was just about to make a report on how much more aggressive adoptive brightness is, especially in low light situations. normally if I'm in complete darkness the brightness will be at like 10% (that's just my guess) and I would always just lower the brightness to 1 so it wouldn't hurt my eyes while using my phone with the lights off. With a small lamp on I was fine with the 10% but now the phone likes to drop down to like 2% and it's just annoying.
