Everytime you use the back gesture or home gesture with the keyboard open. It types a character. Now with RCS messages or if you are on snap, ig, fb, ect it looks like you are still typing to the other person when you think you just backed out of the app. I shouldn't have to open the app back up delete the character and then carefully back out of the app again to avoid it. Gestures are supposed to make things easier not create more hassle.
