Virtual memory uses both hardware and software to enable a phone to compensate for physical memory shortages, in fact, with virtual RAM, you cannot expect any major performance improvement at all. On paper, it may sound like you are getting 6GB RAM + 4GB of virtual RAM, which is supposed to make your phone way faster than others. But in reality the purpose of virtual RAM is different. When virtual memory is increased, the empty space reserved for RAM overflow increases. Having enough available space is absolutely necessary for virtual memory and RAM to function properly. Virtual memory performance can be improved automatically by freeing up resources in the registry.

Your internal storage can be used as virtual memory to improve app performance. In One UI 4.1, RAM Plus now lets you increase virtual RAM even more. Go with more to boost performance or less to save storage space. You can choose between 2 GB, 4 GB, 6GB, or 8 GB.

The options for RAM plus depends on your phone's ram. And it doesn't boost your phone's performance.

Virtual Ram can improve your phone's performance by borrowing a portion of your internal storage (2GB, 4GB, 6GB or 8GB) to be used as additional RAM. If your nearing the limit of your original RAM capacity, the system will put some apps in the Virtual RAM to free some space in your original RAM instead of killing them. Do note that this will not improve game performance and only basic and simple apps like calculator, calendar, etc will be moved to Virtual RAM, all complicated apps like games and social media apps will stay in the original RAM, meaning you won't notice any performance improvements for the said apps when you enable Virtual RAM.
Also I read that using Virtual RAM can degrade the life of flash storage but I'm not sure how that works or if Samsung have preventive measures for that. For me I set mine to 2GB just to be sure cause I'm planning to use my phone for 3-5 years.

RAM Plus works by simply using a chunk of onboard storage to extend the amount of RAM. This is similar to how Windows allocates a portion of disk storage to use as virtual RAM when physical memory becomes insufficient.
Ever since RAM Plus was launched, it could only use 4GB of onboard storage to increase virtual RAM on Samsung devices. There were no options. You couldn’t use less than 4GB or more than 4GB. One can imagine that many users would have wanted to use more than that limit.
One UI 4.1 fixes that. We’ve found the option to extend the RAM Plus limit on Samsung’s latest flagships. RAM Plus can now use 2, 4, 6 and even 8GB of onboard storage to work its magic. This puts more power in the hands of users, which is something that we can always appreciate.
