SupportI have recently had the same issue, but on my Samsung Galaxy A54 5G.
This came after the update to one UI 6.1.
Same as you said, only mine does not close the app, it glitches terribly.
The only thing I've found to help is to clear the app cache, that helps for a bit and also to put your phone on silent, I'm not sure why but something to do with the notifications makes it worse.
Still hoping whatsapp or samsung will fix this issue.

SupportI have an S22 Ultra, and WhatsApp issues are driving me crazy. I lost my message history from 5 years ago, and for the past month, WhatsApp's data structure has been corrupted 2-3 times a week, forcing me to restore from a backup.
Due to my work, this is extremely important, and I’m trying the last steps I can think of before throwing the phone against the wall. No matter if this issue is resolved, the harm done to me can never be repaired.
I reset the phone to factory settings, but the result was the same. I used the phone with very few apps, including WhatsApp, but nothing changed. I even moved forward by completely wiping out my WhatsApp history, but the result was the same, with corruption occurring even with a new history.
