WearablesSmartThings utilise other nearby Samsung devices (with permission) to detect your lost item (called Offline finding), though not as accurate but will give you an estimate location of the item.

WearablesIt's not your device, it's those nearby it.
It shows the last pinged location until refreshed. IT does not need to be near you, as long as there are other Samsung devices nearby your lost item, it will try to use them to bounce signal back to your SmartThings app.
If it's not appearing then there could be a few factors causing it - location (underground), dead battery etc.
I once dropped my device in an Uber, managed to track it using SmartThings and got it back (it was in a different district)
