Texting on Galaxy Watch 5 Pro issues

I have a Galaxy Watch 5 Pro on a Telus Mobility plan. I am having an issue where I cancannot send or receive text messages unless my phone is connected to my phone via Bluetooth. I can make and receive calls on my watches cellular connection but can't text. 

Has anyone been able to figure out how to send and receive texts when the Watch is not connected to the phone?

Which app are you using? Samsung or Google messages?

I am using Samsung messages.

Try Google messages. It's a better text app. Samsung will likely abandon there's soon anyways
