It happened to me with my Watch5 and now again with my Watch7.

While the Watch was running its original release firmware, everything was glorious. Speed, responsiveness and no bugs.

However, with both watches, soon after the first firmware update was applied, a frustrating problem started: the watch would automatically lock itself, even after I entered the PIN.

I thought my mind was playing games with me when it happened today with my Watch7, but I removed it for about 30 minutes, then put it back on and entered the PIN right away, then the next time I glanced at the watch, the little lock icon was there again, signaling that the watch had locked itself after I unlocked it.

After the second unlocking, the watch seems to stay unlocked (just like on the Watch5).

Can someone from Samsung get word of this bug to the devs that manage the firmware?  It's so irritating that good products are continuously spoiled by Samsung themselves.  I thought they had finally turned a corner with the Watch7.

Did you setup Samsung Pay on watch? If yes, it is watch security. Every time your watch leave your wrist, it will lock it up automactically to protect other people take your watch and use samsung pay to buy stuff.

If you don't like this idea, remove Samsung Pay from watch and your watch will be unlock all the time.

Actually, no, I have not set up Samsung Pay.  But I understand what you are referring to.  My issue is that I already have a PIN, and I always enter it right after I fasten my watch to my wrist.  Before the most recent firmware update, when I entered my PIN after wearing my watch, it would stay unlocked.  Now, with the new firmware, the watch will relock itself (while it is still on my wrist!)

Remove the pin from your security settings

If I didn't want and need a PIN, I would have removed it by now. I need a PIN because I use Google Wallet (not Samsung Wallet) and before the update, I would only unlock the watch once when wearing it and I could make payments thereafter WITHOUT needing to re-enter the PIN.

Yeah I removed my security settings because it was such a pain in the *** to use the pin all the time. So I just enable it when I go shopping

I don't know if the below suggestion would help. But worth to try since your watch just upgraded firmware. If wipe cache partition for watch still not working, then it could be software bugs.

Wipe Cache Partition on your watch

Press and hold the power and back buttons at the same time

Release the buttons when the Samsung logo appears (Rebooting...)

Keep tapping the power button (top button) to go to Recovery

Use bottom button to go up and down

Press and hold the power button to select Recovery

Wait for the watch to boot up into the Android recovery menu

Click the bottom back button to go down to select Wipe Cache Partition

Click Yes to proceed (top button)

Click Reboot system (top button)

Wait for the watch to reboot

Thank you, this is really useful information.  I just wiped my cache partition.  Let's see if it makes a difference!

If you use Samsung wallet and enable NFC your watch will lock and request a pin# all the time.
