Hi guys, I've just recently discovered that buying Samsung phones from Vietnam is actually quite a bit cheaper when compared to the prices that we pay for here.

So, my question is this. . What are the negatives and positives (if any) of having a Samsung phone bought in Vietnam but used here in Malaysia. All opinions/info would be much appreciated .

There’s always good and bad in terms of purchasing a mobile phone from local and overseas. Everything is up to the user because end of the day he/ she will be the owner.

I don't know much about the phone and chipset used in Vietnam. But in overall i can only tell you the basic of local and oversea mobile devices only.

Here is some of the advantages and disadvantages if you get a mobile phone from oversea. This is just some of it only.

  • Get no support from carriers (Yes, you can use every single sim card from Malaysia with some changes, like S20 show 4G on Maxis but due to your phone are from different region, it might show LTE. This is just minor changes only. But please do note if you need support from local Telco, they might be clueless because of the different phone region)
  • Get no support from local manufacturer (If your phone need warranty, Samsung Malaysia might not go to bother you. You have to go back to the Samsung store where you get your device)
  • No monthly instalment (You have to pay full amount for the phone. This is not a big problem. Lol)
  • Some application and feature might not appear on your phone (Example: Phone from US, if you use Samsung Pay/ Samsung Wallet in Malaysia, the promotion/ voucher given to your phone are all stated in US region as well as those discount voucher instead of Malaysia. Like you get discount voucher from Nike, but you cannot use it in Malaysia Nike Store)
  • You might have some addition application and feature (Example: Phone from US, you can have Samsung Wallet installed and use it even you are in Malaysia)
  • You won’t get Android update or even a security patch update automatically unless you back to the region where you get the phone. But you can do it manually like downloading it through some trusted website.
  • Different chipset. Some phone like Samsung S10 version in Malaysia is using Exynos chipset but those you purchase from US is a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset

Have a nice weekend.

@WinnieC tqvm for the above info. You're very thorough with the info given so I've come to a conclusion that it's not worthwhile buying a from from anywhere else except our home country.
