OthersRecent reports (around mid-July 2025) indicate that Samsung has been sending out surveys via the Samsung Members app. These surveys reportedly include questions about:
- Wireless charging, particularly Qi2: This suggests a strong interest in adopting the Qi2 standard, which includes magnetic alignment similar to Apple's MagSafe.
- The benefits of built-in magnets for wireless charging: Users were asked if they would accept a slightly thicker phone to accommodate these magnets.
- The use of the USB-C port: Questions were posed about how often users utilize their USB-C port and for what purposes (e.g., charging, data transfer).
- Whether magnet-based Qi2 charging would reduce inconvenience if a phone supported only wireless charging.
While these surveys don't confirm that Samsung will definitely release a portless phone, they clearly show that the company is seriously considering the idea and gauging user interest. It's a strategic move to understand user needs and potential acceptance before making such a significant design change.
The move towards a portless design would likely be driven by a desire for:
- Improved waterproofing and durability: Fewer openings mean fewer points of entry for water and dust.
- Sleeker designs: Removing the port could allow for even thinner devices.
- Reduced manufacturing complexity (potentially): Fewer components could simplify assembly.
However, as discussed before, there are still significant challenges to overcome, especially regarding wireless charging speeds, data transfer capabilities, and compliance with regulations like the EU's USB-C mandate.
It's an interesting time in smartphone development, and your experience with that survey highlights that Samsung is actively exploring the future of phone design, including the controversial idea of going portless.
