Chrome OS devices also run Android, or at least a big enough chunk of Android's base to get apps running alongside Chrome's browser tabs. But you might not have given much thought to exactly what version of Android your Chromebook uses. After all, it's not immediately relevant for most of a Chrome OS device's functions: that's handled by the larger Chrome OS, which is frequently updated by Google along with the browser.

But the version of Android used to run any Android apps on your Chrome OS device is important, if only because it determines whether or not it can take advantage of some of the features added to Google's mobile operating system. The build of Android on Chrome OS will be updated to Android 11 for some devices starting with Chrome version 90, currently running in the beta channel. Notable upgrades from the previous Android 9 base include dark mode and uniform app scaling.

An Android Police reader pointed us to a page in Chromium's Gerrit review repository, which lists all of the code names for the devices running Chrome OS that Google intends to upgrade. We've cross-referenced those names to find the retail laptops, tablets, and desktops ("Chromeboxes") that are getting the Android 11 upgrade along with Chrome 90. Here's the list, broken up by Samsung:

  • Samsung Chromebook 3
  • Samsung Chromebook 4
  • Samsung Chromebook Plus
  • Samsung Chromebook Plus V2
  • Samsung Chromebook Pro
  • Samsung Chromebook+
  • Samsung Galaxy Chromebook
  • Samsung Galaxy Chromebook 2
