At this stage, it’s no secret that Samsung’s Exynos chipsets is quite as revered as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets in the mobile market. Not happy with its current position, there is now word that the Korean electronics giant has put itself on the path to becoming the top Android application processor (AP) makers in the world.
According to Business Korea, Samsung has reportedly already taken its first steps towards its goal of becoming the top dog Android processor maker by teaming up with two tech giants, AMD and ARM. Samsung’s alleged partnership with AMD honestly comes as no surprise; back in June last year, AMD announced that it would be providing Samsung with its RDNA GPU technology for all its upcoming Exynos chipsets.
It’s an area that Samsung’s Exynos SoCs has struggled with, and if the leaked performance metrics of its new RDNA-powered SoC are to be believed, it’s safe to say that Qualcomm could be forced to up its own game in that sector too.
Samsung’s partnership with ARM isn’t all too surprising either, although that relationship could become a little more complicated in the future, especially if – that’s a big if – the UK-based microprocessor brand ends up falling under the NVIDIA umbrella.
That aside, Samsung’s alleged partnership with ARM could see the Korean brand request its new partner to develop a custom Cortex-X CPU. More specifically, it is likely that the CPU would be based on ARM’s own recently announced Cortex-X1 architecture.
At the time of writing, we still don’t know when exactly Samsung intends on putting the new CPU in production, but it goes without saying that there are those among us who would certainly welcome the new chipset. Especially with 5G now beginning to take off.
