I have this same problem. I also found out that when. I manually open the Chrome browser it then navigates to the site I was trying to get to from the widget.

I was having that issue too... From the Google Search widget, I couldn't figure out why links weren't opening, until I figured out that it was Chrome browser that was the issue... Went into settings, deactivated Chrome (Turned it off) and went back into google ... Clicked on a link, and the Default browser popped up at the bottom... Links worked perfectly after selecting my browser...

thanks. I also read in another post that clearing the cache could work. I just cleared the cache. If that doesn't work then ill try your suggestion.
