We already have 600mhz (band 71), but a TMobile rep told me the manufacturer would develop an update to make the standard non 5g model capable of using the new network.

Has anyone heard anything?

LOL, he must have been trying to sell a phone. The hardware isn't there although some AT&T phones actually show 5G in certain areas. AT&T has an enhanced 4g that they actually tried to call 5g and it was showing 5g in the notification bar but it really wasn't.

unless you have a Galaxy S10 5g or note 10 5g you can't use 5g on any network. however, if Sprint and T-Mobile merge successfully, a software update would allow some devices to use both networks

Remember this, ONLY the OnePlus McLaren Edition 5G & Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G can use the new 5G (based on Band 71, aka 600Mhz) by T-Mobile.

NO amount of software update or whatnot, can make other phones to be compatible to that, even the S10 Plus 5G (that's only have 5G in Mmwave frequency).

Have a great day to y'all
