To keep it simple, I think that when gesture hints are shown when on the new gesture navigation system, the bar shouldn't take up a small portion of the bottom of the screen and should either overlay on the app or become slightly transparent as to not cover up anything.  If this cannot be done, I also think that there should be a fix for the color of the surrounding area.  An example of this is Instagram on Dark Mode, when the new navigation gestures and gesture hints are being used the area is still white instead of dark like it should be.

the reason they probably won't do this is to not interfere with the apps itself. overlaying it over the app could make it difficult to maybe click on your space bar or accessing the bottom toolbar you see on most social media apps like twitter and Instagram.
