I don't remember what phone I had at the time but it had the ability to use the front camera to not only keep the screen on while looking at the phone but it would automatically scroll as you read further down the page. Is potentially something we will see in the future?

The S10 series already has the ability to keep the screen awake while looking at the screen.
Settings > Advanced Features > Motions and Gestures > Smart Stay.

There however is not a way to make the screen automatically scroll.

I believe it was the s4 they scrolled on it own but everybody called it a gimmick

I think that's correct! I remember it actually being pretty useful. Sad I've reached the point of lazyness that I can't be bothered to manually scroll lol.
