I’ve been using Samsung phones since phones became smart but, this week, I have laid my Galaxy A22 5G to rest and fired up a Motorola g20. The reason? Fingerprint sensor on the power button. In the beginning, when I moved from my Galaxy A30, I setup lock screen security on the A22 using the same combination of biometrics on the lock screen but I soon had to abandon fingerprint sensing as I found it almost impossible to put the phone in my pocket without contacting the side button and so switching it on. Even with the options in Settings to keep the phone locked in my pocket, it still came on.
Worse still, while it was on in my pocket, Emergency calls were being made. It took me several trips to Samsung stores before I found someone who knew how to remove Emergency from the lock screen and PIN entry screens. I struggled along with the A22 for a couple of years until I noticed I was having to press the power button several times to switch the phone on or off. Back to the store again where I was told that the battery was swelling and putting pressure on the switch action. Changed the battery. Switch still not working well and I guess this is because it does dual duty for fingerprint sensor as well as power on/off. Incidentally, I am still charging my A30 every day like the A22 and have never had problems switching it on and no swollen battery either.
I always carry my A30 when I travel because the A22 (bought in Thailand) has no NFC while the A30 (bought in the Philippines) did have it. As the issues with the A22 switch weren’t getting any better, as I use it for all my banking transactions and as I am planning extended travel to several countries that support NFC, I decided it would be safer to replace the A22 with a new phone where the fingerprint sensor was on the back like the A30. But the only new Samsung phone offering fingerprint support anywhere other than the side button was an S series model priced at 3 times my budget. And its sensor was on the front screen. No way was I going to experiment with that!
Initially, my plan was to simply buy another Galaxy A30 but one of the phone comparison Web sites popped up the Motorola g20 which is 2 years newer than the A30, is NFC-capable, has the screen sharpness of the A22 and is only half the price of the A22.
So, it’s “Sayonara Samsung” for me. I miss some of the standard ringtones, the g20’s alarms are not so easy to set up and the three soft buttons at the bottom of the home screen are the opposite way round but, apart from these minor things that I am rapidly getting used to, I’m very happy to hear… Hello Moto when I switch on.
