Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas 🎄

Have you taken a stroll down Orchard Road trying to snap a nice shot of the Christmas trees, festive lightings and neon lights? Did you try to capture the moment only to realise that your photos did not turn out as what your eyes had perceived. Disappointed?

Let me share how you can make use of the "Pro" mode in your Samsung mobile camera, to try and capture as close to what your eyes perceived. Do note that the human's eyes have the best "sensor" and "lenses", so we can only try to capture as close as the real object.

Compare the above shots using "Auto" and "Pro" mode, using the Z Fold 2.
  • Photo 1 in Auto Mode : The captured photo appears to be "noisy" and overly exposed. (The neons lights are not suppose to look this way)
  • Photo 2 in Pro Mode : The photo (background) appeared to be "darker", but it is less noisy, especially at the area near the neon lightings.
Here how it can be done:
  • Run the "Camera" App, Swipe Left to "More"
  • Click the "Pro" Mode
(Refer to Photo 3 above)
Let me share 3 settings which you can play around with;
  • ISO : This refers to the sensitivity of the camera sensor. In a low lighting condition, set the ISO to a higher value. But Remember, the higher the ISO, the "noisier" the photo becomes.
  • WB : This refers to "white balance", the higher the WB, the "warmer" the photo will become (e.g. photo turn out to appear more "orangish"). The lower the WB will result in the photo becoming" whitish bluish".
  • Shutter Speed : This is represented by the small little icon above the "ISO" (referring to the above camera settings photo), it is in units of seconds. It means, how long the camera lens will 'open' to capture the amount of light into the camera sensor. Ok, if it sounds complicated, just remember, the higher the shutter speed will likely result in your photos being over exposed (e.g. photo turn out to be all white), and the lower the shutter speed will result in an under exposed photo (e.g. photo turn out dark and almost black).
So much of the technical geeks and terms, here are some suggestions on how you can shoot it.
  • WB : Set this to "Auto" , if you want.
  • ISO : Set it to 800 (max) .
  • Shutter Speed : Set it to a reasonable duration so that it will not be under or over exposed.
In Photo 4 above, it is the manual settings that used to shoot the LV neon light.

To conclude, I hope my sharing enables you to capture better photos, especially in low lighting conditions with bright and colorful lights. Have fun capturing moments this Christmas season with your friends and family members.

BUT, do remember to practice safe social distancing and put on your mask!😷

Stay Safe.
