Here is some steps you can try:
• Enable USB debugging: Go to your phone's Settings > Developer options > Enable USB debugging. If you don't see Developer options, go to About phone and tap the build number seven times to unlock it.
• Clear app data and cache: Go to your phone's Settings > Apps > Android Auto > Storage > Clear data and Clear cache.
• Disable battery optimization: Go to your phone's Settings > Battery > Battery optimization > All apps > Android Auto > Don't optimize.
• Disable Bluetooth: Sometimes, Bluetooth can interfere with Android Auto. Turn off Bluetooth on your phone and car, then try connecting with a USB cable.

Same issue here and it didn't solve the issue. Google Android Auto forum is full of users having issues to connect through USB. Such a disappointment

I have same problem to connect to Android Auto from my S23+.
My scenorio is:
1. Connect cable to car USB port from phone
2. Start car accessories or turn on engine
3. Restart phone
4. Android Auto connected successfully and work as expected.
5. Disconnect cable half way of driving
6. Phone failed to connect with error message "can't connect to car screen" and ask to try different port
7. Connection fails until restart the phone again
Wonder if this really due to cable issue? As it can connect at the first place.
