I tested out the sort feature, both custom and Alphabetical, and now I cannot turn this feature off. When I move any icon, it will zip right back to its old location. I partly fixed this by going to settings->Display->home screen-> then disabling "lock home screen layout", which fixed the main screen. However, using your finger to scroll up from the bottom of the screen, which shows you your downloaded apps, it still does not work here. I've searched the web and tried everything, but I cannot remove this sort on my Samsung S9. I really hope some smart person here can help.
