Via press release, MediaTek has announced that the flagship Samsung 8K QLED Y21 smart TV will be powered by the MediaTek MT7921AU SoC with integrated Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. When compared to Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E utilizes Bluetooth 5.2 and the 6 GHz band for even faster transfer rates and lower latency. We can only imagine that the extra bandwidth will come in handy when streaming content at resolutions greater than 4K.

Other than that, the announcement is barebones leaving more questions than answers. We still don't know when the QLED Y21 will actually launch, if the MT7921AU SoC will be able to stream native 8K content at 60 FPS or higher smoothly, or what the product will even look like. It's more than likely that MediaTek is simply trying to associate its name with high-end Samsung products and boost public perception in the process. Existing smart TVs from Samsung, like the NEO QLED, are also powered by MediaTek processors. Nonetheless, it'll be quite a while before we can get our hands on real-world 8K displays like these at reasonable prices.
