Note : I wrote the following blog using my Samsung Galaxy Book. :) The tool I used does not have a bearing, though, to the key points of the blog. I just wanted to (also) express that I'm elated to still be able to write articles or blogs using my tablet/laptop.

A balanced working time and personal time is paramount to be happy in a job. Whereas it's true that it might not be the main reason a person (i.e. an employee) considers why he or she stays in a company, I strongly believe that it's one of the key foundations why an employee is able to think wisely how he or she will operate to deliver the expectations of the company from him or her and to achieve his or her personal goals (i.e. interests) whether any of these is aligned to his or her professional targets or to his or her personal aims.

There is no specific measurement tool how to say that a person has maximized his or her time-off from work. As many experts or experienced people can attest, one is able to consider that his or her time-off is maximized if he or she is satisfied. Arguably, if a person is not yet satisfied, it can be safely presumed that either the person has not yet maximized his or her time-off or the person miscalculated how long should his or her time-off be or the person is bound to only have a limited time-off. Either of these, one thing is evident : there should always be a balance.

I've recently read a good article about how to "manage" a time-off. It's an article published by the famous Harvard Business Review last 01 Dec 2021. The article was written (as credited) by Laura M. Giurge and Vanessa Bohns.

The article, entitled "Be Intentional About How You Spend Your Time Off," contains one key learning point that says "setting goals can actually help us recharge and ensure we get the most out of our leisure time."

Many employees prefer not to use their personal time-off (or vacation leave) credits as they are anticipating a possible buy-back program when a fiscal year ends. There is nothing wrong with this strategy per se but what will make this wrong is the misinterpretation about when to use and when not to use a personal time-off credit. Some people blame the company for exerting too much pressure on them to deliver everything. At times, this is short of saying the employees are stressed or burnt out; and that they don't even have time to rest or to take a time-off.

I doubt that all companies are unfairly treating the employees on this aspect. I recognize that some companies do; I just don't have a sufficient proof to prove this; yet, even if I do, this blog is not the proper venue to handle such a case. We should always be fair. The company should approve the personal time-off of an employee provided that it's coordinated well to ensure an ample capacity to achieve the targets. The employee should be responsible enough to manage when to take a personal time-off and when to look at the situation from a delivery perspective. As an employee, help the company meet its targets. In return, expect the company to take care of you with respect to your contract; and, possibly, through the reward and recognition program it might have, too.

Nevertheless, as a person, do not make your job your life. This is an unsolicited advice but it's up to you if your preference is to make your job, essentially, your life. To me, my job is just a small component of how I want to live my life. I will render service to the company during my working time but I will not let this working time exceed unreasonably. By "unreasonably," I mean that the working time is already encroaching my daily personal time.
