Figured out the exact conditions for reproducing spontaneous and persistent random reboots:
1) Always On Display either always on or on tap
2) Show charging information enabled under display settings
3) Fingerprint sensor indicator enabled, either on tap or on always on display
4) Set a video as lockscreen wallpaper
5) turn screen off
6) connect phone to wall charger or put phone in pocket

Wait 10-15 minutes. Entire phone crashes and reboots. Keeps repeating. Resulting in missed calls and messages, especially VoIP and internet based messaging services.

Workarounds available (no need to factory reset): either
1) disable AOD entirely, including fingerprint indicator and charging information
Or
2) change wallpaper to a photo instead of video

in order to fix this, I recommend backing data up and factory reset to fix a bunch of other problems, and be sure to tell everyone to do this to help them
