Galaxy AHi @TheJoanna, AOD will use battery for the pixels that are lit up e.g the white font with the time, but all the others areas are off so it will only drain a small amount of battery as compared to the whole screen being on.
You can also set up AOD to turn on within a scheduled time, or as 'tap to show' rather than 'always' if you would prefer to save more battery. To do this,
Settings > Lock Screen > Always On Display > On > choose from 'Tap to show/Always/Show as scheduled'
Hope this helps!

Galaxy AHi @TheJoanna, unfortunately there is no option to activate it via notification. You can choose from Always On, Tap to show, or Show as scheduled. Tap to show would be the closest to the option you are after as the AOD can show notifications when activated.
