Do you need a PC to install Android 12 if so how do you do it?

I tried to update now but it didn't work but it's weird because it took longer for it to check for updates than the other attempts

Mine worked. It said "A new software version is available". Can you try again?

Does factory resetting it cause it to break?

No, you don't necessarily need a PC to install Android 12. If it's supported by your device, an Over The Air Update will be rolled out to your phone. Be sure to check from time to time the latest Software updates as follows:
Settings > About Phone > Software Updates > Download, if available > Install > Follow On-Screen notifications.

Then why do I see videos with the similar title of "How to install Android 12 without a pc" like it's required
