As a long-time user of Samsung's foldable devices since the Z Fold 2 series, I was eagerly anticipating the release of the Z Fold 6. Here are my initial thoughts and experiences with this latest model.
Good Impressions:
- Beautiful Displays: The inner and exterior displays are stunning. The wider exterior display is fantastic for quick tasks like checking emails, replying to messages, and more. Typing and using the exterior display is much easier compared to older Z Fold models. Both displays are bright and easy to use outdoors.
- Improved Thermal Performance: Editing photos on Adobe Lightroom has been a breeze with the Z Fold 6. It doesn't heat up as much compared to the Z Fold 4, which is a significant improvement.
- Thinner and Lighter: The thinner chassis and lighter body make a noticeable difference in day-to-day use. It's much easier to use one-handed.
- Enhanced Build Quality: The upgraded aluminum shell with its matte texture feels great in hand, providing a grippier texture. I also appreciate the laser-etched Samsung logo on the hinge, which reduces the areas where gunk and dirt can accumulate.
- Better Battery Life: The upgraded, more efficient SoC has resulted in better battery life compared to previous models
Areas for Improvement:
- S-Pen Support for Exterior Display: It would be fantastic to have S-Pen support on the exterior display.
- Larger Battery Capacity: A slightly bigger battery would further enhance the device's battery life.
- Faster Charging: Both wired and wireless charging speeds could be improved.
- Improved Under-Screen Camera: The under-screen camera still suffers from the Moiré effect around the area. Enhancing the density to make it more hidden when not in use would be a welcome upgrade.
- Updated Cameras: The Z Fold 6 cameras are the same as the Z Fold 4 and Fold 5. Upgrading the main sensor from 50MP to 108MP, similar to the S22 Ultra or Galaxy A73, would be a significant enhancement.
Optional Accessories Request:
- Larger or Premium S-Pen: A larger S-Pen or a premium pen shell for the current S-Pen would be handy for longer use. I often DIY with an old fountain pen for comfort.
- New Wireless Car Charger: I still use Samsung's Wireless Charging Cradle from the Z Fold 3 and love it. An updated model with an inbuilt fan, higher wireless charging output, and a new design would be perfect for using my Z Fold 6 as my media and navigation system in the car.
Verdict:
I absolutely love my Z Fold 6 for both daily and business tasks. It's my go-to navigation device for my car, a powerhouse for photo and video editing for work, and my favorite on-the-go media device. The new boxy book-style fold design is comfortable and a joy to use. I hope Samsung considers some of these suggestions for future foldable devices, especially S-Pen support for the external screen.
Overall, the Samsung Z Fold 6 is an exceptional device that has exceeded my expectations.
