Possible causes are as follows.

1) S-Pen needs to be charged.

2) It's too far away from your device.

3) There is magnetic interference with the S Pen.

Action to be taken.

1. Remove any third-party cases or covers. 
2. Change the S Pen tip.
3. Try it with another compatible device.
4. Reboot your phone.
5. Check for the latest software and updates. Settings> Software update > Download and install. Follow the on-screen instructions.
6. Change certain settings, if the bottom of the screen does not recognize the S Pen.
7. Connection status in Air action settings. Settings app > Select Advanced features > Tap S Pen > Tap Air actions. > After reinserting the S Pen into your phone, check the connection status of S Pen.
8. Reset the S Pen and connect it again.
