check your Animator duration scale, it needs to be turned on. 1x is best for the system.

1. Change your messages to Samsung messages to see if it's because you're using Android messages instead of Samsung's.
2. Double check your settings. see if works if not,
3. clear your cache partition from the bootloader & give it a try.

it doesn't work for several third party apps when screen is off, including Android messages unless you download an app from the play store as stated above.

just an fyi - I use Textra (ended up getting when Google f"d up the messages app, accidentally removing custom notifications for contacts - love all the customizations)
anyway, edge lighting works with Textra messaging.
