What are the right angles on the bottom of the lockscreen for?

On the homescreen it seems to show that you can swipe up diagonally to access recent apps. Not sure what it's supposed to do on the lockscreen though.

on either side it's too access Google assistant. it's the same on my pixel 2 it hides most of the time
