Instead of hiding the gesture bar/pill (whatever you want to call it) when you have the option on. Why not have it pops up when you interact with it. So now you swipe or swipe and hold it will pop up. Then after a few seconds it will vanish. And when you tap on at area it pop up for a few seconds so you can swipe between your recent apps, because I find it annoying having to do a U gesture just to go between your recent apps. Then when you the gesture hint on you just need to swipe left and right.
