Tips & Tricks
I got concussion on Matariki weekend 🤕😵💫😓
Some of the biggest issues I experienced involved driving, bright lights, sounds, and screens.
It's near impossible to stay completely away from screens, so I made some accessibility adjustments on my Galaxy S24 Ultra.
Here are some of the settings that helped with my recovery 👇
🔵 Blue light filter
Blue light can make symptoms worse including headaches. Within Settings, there are added options including colour temperature.
Located: Settings > Display > Eye comfort shield
🔠 Text size and font
Larger, bolder fonts reduce strain on the eyes. I noticed a big difference with just a slight increase in text size.
Located: Settings > Display > Font size and style
💡 Screen brightness
Lowering the screen brightness reduces overstimulation in low-light or sensitive environments. I also changed this setting on my computer monitors and TV.
Located: Settings > Display > Brightness
🌈 Dark mode
I had this in place already but I really want to encourage anyone dealing with concussion or headaches to use this setting. It helps with brightness, makes it easier to read text, and is generally easier on the eyes.
Located: Settings > Display > Dark mode
🎯 Focus mode
I use Modes and Routines a lot throughout my day, and Focus Mode was especially helpful over the last few months to help manage notifications and other distractions when my brain needed rest.
Located: Modes and Routines > Focus Mode
🧭 Motion reduction
The options to Reduce Animations + Reduce Transparency and Blur both help with eye strain and issues with focusing.
Located: Settings > Accessibility > Vision enhancements
🧏 Accessibility Shortcuts
Turn this on to toggle helpful features like Magnification, Grayscale, or Extra Dim.
Located: Settings > Accessibility > Advanced settings > Accessibility button
These features all helped me with my recovery but there are lots more settings available for managing symptoms. If you're going through a concussion, or just dealing with screen fatigue, try them out.
And if you have any more tips, leave a comment below 💙
